Short-Track Roundup: Hafertepe Jr. claims Canadian Sprint Nationals, results and more
The seventh-annual Canadian Sprint Nationals at Ontario's Ohsweken Speedway was one of the biggest sprint-car races of the Sept. 17 weekend.

Texan Sam Hafertepe Jr. sat and watched the first two nights of action at the three-eighths-mile dirt track, saving his equipment for Saturday night's finale.

The move paid off to the tune of $11,000 as the 25-year-old continued his breakout season, which includes his first World of Outlaws victory.

Shane Stewart and Dustin Daggett won preliminary features during the Canadian Sprint Nationals.

LET FREEDOM RING

Duane Howard picked up a check for $21,000 for winning the prestigious Freedom 76 modified race at Pennsylvania's Grandview Speedway for the fourth time. While Howard earned a healthy payday for winning the 41st-annual event at the one-third-mile dirt track, he could win even more for his fifth Freedom 76 triumph next season.

Promoter Bruce Rogers announced the 2012 race will pay $50,000 in recognition of the 50th consecutive season of racing at the Bechtelsville, Pa., track.

CLOSING THE GAP

Two-time defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Josh Richards continued to gain ground on points leader Rick Eckert, as the West Virginia hot-shoe chases his third-straight series championship.

Richards got his eighth victory of the season on Saturday night at I-55 Raceway in Missouri. The $10,875 triumph pulled him to within 16 points of Eckert with five races remaining.

STREAKING

Hot off his first ARCA Racing Series triumph of the season on Labor Day Monday at DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds, Chris Buescher collected his second consecutive victory and the fourth of his ARCA career on Saturday night at Indiana's Salem Speedway.

Driving the Roulo Brothers Racing Ford, Buescher became only the second driver with multiple ARCA victories this season. He ranks second in the standings behind Ty Dillon, who has won seven times.

NASCAR TOURING

Todd Szegedy turned right and left in winning Saturday's NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Connecticut's Lime Rock Park road course. It is the only road-racing event on the Tour schedule. Szegedy's 17th career victory also lifted him into the points lead.

Meanwhile, Scott Steckly edged Peter Shepherd III to win the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series late-model race at Nova Scotia's Riverside International Speedway.

THE OUTLAWS

Steve Kinser bounced back from a flip on Friday night at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, to win Saturday night's World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race at Minnesota's Deer Creek Speedway.

Kinser's ninth win this year tied him for the most in the series in 2011 with Craig Dollansky, who earned his ninth triumph of the campaign at Clay County in a race where he also served as event promoter.

FREMONT FLIER

One week after clinching the Fremont-Attica Sprint Series championship worth $10,000, hometown boy Bryan Sebetto earned another $10,000 after holding off Tim Shaffer to win Saturday night's Jim Ford Classic sanctioned by the All-Star Circuit of Champions at Fremont (Ohio) Speedway. Shaffer edged Sebetto to win Friday night's preliminary feature at the third-mile dirt track.

VICTORY LANE

-- Jason Johnson collected his 100th career American Sprint Car Series triumph in Friday night's ASCS Midwest Region event at Nebraska's I-80 Speedway.

-- Scott Bloomquist won in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race at Winchester (Va.) Speedway Friday. It was his 12th victory in the series this season.

-- Casey Riggs claimed his second USAC National Sprint Car Series (a race cosanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series) victory of the season in Saturday night's event at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

-- Jerrod Hull won the Tom Knowles Memorial sprint-car race at Spoon River Speedway in Illinois. Also at Spoon River, Kyle Larson collected the POWRi National Midget Series top prize. Bryan Clauson aced the POWRi event the previous night at Jacksonville, Ill.
