Dieter Zetsche wants Mercedes-Benz to be ‘efficiency world champions’
At a recent press conference at the Paris Motor Show, Daimler CEO, Dieter Zetsche, said he will do the “unthinkable” to get Mercedes-Benz into top position as most fuel efficient premium car brand. To do this, the company has to overtake both BMW and Audi. Quite a big task as both companies have some sort [...]

The Daimler-Nissan/Renault Deal: What it Means

Daimler AG chief Dieter Zetsche, still sore from getting out of his predecessor Jurgen Schrempp's 1998 deal to buy Chrysler, says Mercedes-Benz got just one thing out of the "merger of equals": a new V-6 engine family. Selling Chrysler to Cerberus in 2007 led a trend to divestiture, especially at Ford Motor Company and General Motors. And now, everybody's talking about more casual alliances on specific platforms and models, not quite the same, but not entirely unlike Renault SA's alliance with Nissan Motor Company in 1999.
Mercedes-Benz Goes Big on Green: Near-future lineup includes diesel, hybrids, Diesotto, and fuel cell cars

Cost won't stop Mercedes-Benz delivering a huge near-future lineup of diesel, hybrids, Diesotto and, later, fuel cell cars, Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche says. Whereas GM's Bob Lutz says cars will get far more expensive if they're to meet fuel economy standards, Zetsche takes a different line. "I hear some competitors speculating that whatever it costs to meet the targets, that will be transferred to the customer. But since this is a legal requirement in order to sell the cars, the willingness of the customer to come up with the full bill will be limited. I consider the realistic definition for the pricetag is that the [customer's] investment has a payback as a fuel saving during the first three or four years of the vehicle's life."
AMG Considers RWD Baby Benz

Mercedes-Benz in-house hot-shop AMG is considering creating a high-performance small car off the forthcoming MFA platform. But here's the twist: While the MFA, which will underpin the next-generation A-Class, B-Class, and three new small Mercedes models by 2012, is a front-drive platform, the AMG car will be rear drive. A decision on the project is due later this month.
The smallest car in the current AMG lineup is the 6.2-liter V-8-powered C63. Mercedes has offered an AMG-modified A-Class in the past, but AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg says a front-drive performance car is incompatible with the performance company's core values. He says AMG has looked at the MFA platform and believes it can engineer a rear-drive version. "We have the capability to do it," he says.

More on the Mercedes, Renault-Nissan Team Up

Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche and Renault/Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn have signed an agreement to share technologies and platforms, with a miniscule 3.1-percent equity exchanging hands. The two chiefs lead a 12-member committee to identify and work on projects where the three auto giants can find synergy.
This is the latest in a long line of attempts by Mercedes to partner with a mass-market automaker that can help with popularly priced models without tainting the three-pointed star. The three expect to realize cost savings and added revenue of about $5.4 billion from the deal, which is open-ended in time and number of potential projects. It also helps Renault/Nissan fill up its underutilized capacity and helps both better compete with the Volkswagen Group juggernaut.

Car News Test DrivesBefore you and me see new models of cars or modifications of old one, they pass through the stricked control in laboratories, garages, on streets and platforms. Everything thing is called test drives. There cars are tested on a great number of points – power, safety, control, easiness of driving, protect from damages and other features. Tests can be made not only for the whole car, but for its separate parts also – wheels, air bags, hardness of base, suitiness of wheels to the type of road, protect from temperature and many others. For each, even smallest detail, scientists have couple of test.
In special laboratories techniques create situations and observe how car will show itself. How will these situations will influence passengers and driver.
It helps producers to identify all problems and disadvantages due to correct them before mass production. In case of low quality test drives, innocent people can be harmed.
While cars are tested instead of passengers, soft manikins are used. Numerous appliances are based on them, and at the moment of artificial crash it will memorize the force of hit, speed, possible damage on other characteristics, needed to be clarified.
When parts are tested they may be separated from the car structure or be on their place. These test also show what material is better to be used on this or those detail, how long will it serve and how it should be treated.
Kia Rio B-Spec First Drive
As I came up fast over the crest just before the sharp right-hander, I felt the race car begin to understeer away from me. "No worries," I thought, forgetting what exactly I was driving, "I'll just get on the power and get it straightened out." A tank-slapper later I was facing the other direction on the edge of the grass. I had just spun out on my first lap ever in a race car. A front-drive Kia Rio B-Spec race car, at that.
