Audi reveals 2012 A5 DTM race car
Audi on Monday took the cover off its new A5 DTM competitor at the Frankfurt motor show. The race car meets DTM's new technical regulations that will take effect in 2012. The two-door coupe will replace the current four-door A4 DTM.

Audi combined a carbon-fiber monocoque and a steel cage to create the A5 DTM's chassis, which also gets a carbon-fiber body. More than 50 parts are identical in all DTM cars built by Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz as part of the 2012 regulations.

"Due to these shared components, it was possible to achieve the cost-reduction target of up to 40 percent without compromising on the safety and attractiveness of the DTM vehicles," Audi motorsport boss Wolfgang Ullrich said in a company statement.

The A5 DTM is powered by a V8 making 460 hp. Power is sent through a six-speed gearbox with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Audi's car uses the same front and rear steel subframes as the rest of the competitors, as specified by the regulations. This limits engineers' ability to adjust the suspension, according to Audi. The DTM also limits what teams can do in terms of aerodynamics. The body of a 2012 DTM car is designed to improve the car's performance in the slipstream and to be stronger for car-to-car contact, according to Audi.

"In the past, Audi has had very innovative solutions, particularly in the area of aerodynamics in the DTM," said Martin Mühlmeier, Audi Sport's head of engineering. "Since these areas have been subjected to severe restrictions, good detailed solutions will now be crucial to achieving advantages over the competition."

While cars are tested instead of passengers, soft manikins are used. Numerous appliances are based on them, and at the moment of artificial crash it will memorize the force of hit, speed, possible damage on other characteristics, needed to be clarified.
