2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe
BMW will expand the 6 Series lineup -- which, until now, has consisted only of two-door models -- in 2013 with a new sedan.
Despite the name, the Gran Coupe has four doors and is technically a sedan. No matter -- the Gran Coupe's sultry looks and low, sloping roofline instantly distinguish it from a traditional sedan design. Aside from the revised sheetmetal and the addition of two doors, the new model is essentially a close twin of the 6 Series coupe and convertible models that are already on sale.

A Bug's Life: Jan Haacke, VW Designer
We had this New Beetle in between. And it had this image of a quirky car, a feminine car. And when you look at it, it's basically three circles. It's like a kid's drawing with three circles. Also, it lacked direction. So we looked at [the New Beetle] and said, "Yeah, it's a nice car. But what did we do wrong?" Then we looked [at the original], and it had much more direction. We wanted to bring back the old spirit and avoid this toyish character.

U.S. Market Share for the Top Five Automakers
Even before General Motors' and Chrysler Group's summer 2009 bankruptcies, the U.S. auto industry was moving toward a Western European model. There, the largest automakers, Volkswagen Group, Ford, and Renault (or, sometimes Peugeot/Citroen) each have about 18 percent market share. VW leads, but none of the three dominates in the manner that GM has dominated the U.S. market for much of the last century.

First Test: 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
First Test: 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Friday afternoon traffic in L.A. isn't the ideal environment for a $217,325 supercar, but that's exactly where I found myself on my first day with the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. I also had to keep an eye on my fellow commuters who, at first sight of the gullwing coupe, turned into car-crazed, law-breaking paparazzi. First up in my rearview mirror was an Audi S6, its tailgating driver taking both hands off the wheel in an attempt to snap focus photos from his iPhone. Ditto the Prius driver to my left. Never mind the risk of a hefty ticket or that the SLS is more than three times thirstier than his fuel-sipping hybrid - his Facebook wall now features an epic photo of the SLS.
